Honda Sensing is an innovative suite of safety systems designed to protect you from accidents. It uses cameras, sonar, sensors, and radar to warn you of potential accident risks so you can intervene and prevent them. Some of these systems actively assist in preventing a collision. We’re going to take a close look at some of these Honda safety features that protect you.

Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)
LKAS uses a camera to detect the lane line markings on the road to keep you centered in your lane. Once the lines are identified, the system instantly warns you if you’re going to leave the lane and a direction indicator isn’t active. It supplies visual and audio alerts and will apply mild steering torque to direct you back into your lane.
Road Departure Mitigation System (RDMS)
RDMS also uses a camera and will detect road edge lines. It’s easy to inadvertently stray across line lines, especially if it’s dark and you’re tired. Unfortunately, this is dangerous as you could easily collide with another vehicle already in that lane. If you’re not actively steering to cross the lines, you receive audio and visual alerts to warn you.
If you continue to cross the lines, the system provides mild steering torque and/or activates the brakes, depending on the urgency. This gives you sufficient warning to resume steering and move into your lane center.
Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR)
A small, dedicated camera watches for road signs and speed limitations and displays an image of the sign on your screen. This can be extremely helpful since it’s possible to miss a particular sign when driving.
Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
This state-of-the-art system scans the area ahead of you for vehicles. If a vehicle is detected, the system determines if an accident is likely based on your speed and the distance to the other vehicle. The system will beep and a brake warning will appear on your screen to alert you if you need to slow down or stop to avoid a collision.
Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS)
CMBS uses a camera and radar to detect any vehicle ahead of your Honda. If the system identifies a potential collision risk on the road, it will provide audio and visual warnings. If you don’t apply the brakes, it applies light braking to slow your Honda.
If CMBS determines a collision is inevitable and you haven’t applied the brakes, it automatically engages hard braking to bring you to an almost instant stop. This swift action may prevent an accident or will reduce damage from an accident.
These systems are included in every Honda, and your model may have additional safety features. If you’d like to know more, contact us today at Coeur d’Alene Honda in Coeur d’Alene, ID.
